History of Telescope

Telescope is the one of the great invention of all. It makes men powerful to see the distant object clearly. It was one of the great revolutions of seventeenth century, though there is some documents available who shows that its concept is of before 17th century but there is no any clear design available. It is also consider that telescope is the invention of craftsman but they were illiterate so no proof available. It often becomes the part of controversy between followers of geocentric astronomy and of heliocentric astronomy.

The news about the discovery of such kind of instrument came in to existence in 1608 by Hans Lipperhey of Middelburg, he came to patent this instrument and later this was attempt by Jacob Metius of Alkmaar. This news was like a fire in Europe. In 1609, three powered spyglasses were in market by Pont Neuf in Paris. And later it was available in Italy. But we consider Galileo as the father of Telescope because this device famous. He constructed and presented eight powered instrument in August 1609 and made 20 powered instrument. This instrument was capable to observe moon and satellites of Jupiter and some stars patches. Since there were no sufficient instruments available at that time so initially it was difficult for everyone to see some lunar or other details of distant object. But there were some short coming of this telescope: firstly it having small field of view i.e. about 15 arc minutes and also polish was poor.

With the time many new inventions made in telescope, high quality polish was made, and Galilean telescope of higher magnification were made but because of concomitant shrinking of the field.

The Galilean telescope could be use for the both purpose i.e. terrestrial and celestial, but after 17th century the Galilean telescope was replaced for terrestrial purposes by the terrestrial telescope, which had four convex lenses known as objective, ocular, erector lens, and a field lens. In the starting of 1640s, the length of telescope was increased. Galilean telescope was of 5 or 6 feet but astronomical telescope was of 15 to 20 feet. Magnification power of astronomical telescope was about 100 times. But long telescope were not worth for observation. After 1675 astronomers started using pole by means of ball-joint and aimed by means of a string. Many high quality telescopes were designed in the middle of eighteenth and 19th century. Now a day every type of telescope is being available in market.

Amateur Telescope Making

When we talk about the field of amateur telescope making we generally say that people take it as a hobby in the beginning!! In the past when Galileo developed the astronomical invention by adapting it from the Dutch inventions everyone was amazed, .Since then astronomers have been developing telescopes according to their needs. The different sky lovers have been taking this as a hobby but using telescopes gained popularity in the twentieth century and became popular.

Telescopes made by people may vary. The different telescopes made by amateur astronomers may include the Refractors, Schmidt Casssegrains and Maksutoys. However he most widely made telescopic design is the Newtonian reflector. The design of this new telescope is rely useful because it has one of the largest size, and you have also to spend less. The design uses a single reflector mirror and it works as its objective, so the person who is making e telescope has to polish and ground only a single surface. A Telescope if has been designed in a unique way holds greater importance. A Newtonian telescope should be the one an amateur should start with, for this you can easily search the books, the internet, take help from Astro clubs or join the nearest Astro workshop.

Firs when making the reflector of the telescope you have to very attentively and smoothly polish and ground the mirror. Then you have to give it the correct shape. It may happen that the telescopes with a high focus ratio may be using spherical mirrors .The different tools use to achieve the different shapes are amazing and really simple .They include a number of glass tools with varying sizes ,a number of fine abrasives as well as a polishing pitch usually made from a typical type of tree sap. By applying a series of random strokes the mirror tends to become spherical and assumes the desired shape. But make sure you get the desired parabola. You can use a Foucault to test the shape of the mirror. You have to also shadow the mirror at the time of Foucault testing. Then you have to put the silver coating on the mirror, a thin coating of a highly reflecting substance. You have also to aluminize the mirror by placing it in a vacuum chamber with electrically heated tungsten or nichrome coils, some people expose it to pure oxygen or air in an oven so that the mirror will form a tough, clear layer of aluminum oxide.

The design, construction and working of the telescopes made may vary; you may go for a crude look or even an aesthetic look with greater levels of mechanical finish.

To conclude with one should always prefer making a telescope which is as large as possible, is easy to make, can be made using material which are easily available, are not too costly and are durable as well and can be transported easily. The telescope can be mounted on simple plywood at the right position.

Telescope Tripods

Telescopes are no longer restricted to large observatories, or great astronomers. Today, it is widely used and you are likely to find a telescope, in around every school or college. It has also found its way in a large number of homes as well. Every time, an astronomical event of grand nature is about to take place, telescope sales goes up by a huge margin. As it is, most people buy telescopes, simply for observing the planets of our solar system, while those telescopes which are situated in large observatories are a lot more powerful and are used for larger purposes.

Now, when you buy a telescope, there are a few accessories, that you can not simply miss. One of these accessories is the telescope tripod. As it is, a tripod refers to a three legged system, which is used for holding an object in a steady position. Most of us have seen tripods in our school laboratories. These are characterized by three branches, or legs. Hence they are called tripods. These legs are joined together at a pivotal point, which is known as the platform. However, a telescope tripod is a bit different from those used in laboratories, although the basic idea remains the same, i.e. to hold something steady.

Initially, these tripods were rather simple and uncomplicated. They were usually made of wood and were not extendable in height. These days however, things have changed a lot and telescope tripods are available in wide range of variety and style. Theses days, most telescope tripod stands are made of metals and plastics, and are usually of extendable heights, to suit the requirements and comfort of the user. Apart from the platform, these legs are also connected together with other kinds of arrangements, such as a chain, a tray, or a folding brace. This is done, to control the outward fold movement of the tripod legs, so that they do not fold outwards, more than what is required.

Nowadays telescope tripods are no longer restricted to only holding the telescope in a steady position. As it is, these days, they are accompanied by a wide range of features, which makes the observation of celestial bodies and astronomical events a lot more comfortable. So, these days, you are available with telescope tripod stands, which are accompanied with anti vibration pads for better viewing, as well as eyepiece trays to keep the eyepieces handy enough. These telescope tripods may also be accompanied with a carrying case. As it is, there are a number of choices, in regard to a telescope tripod stand. However, before you buy one, there are a few important aspects, the foremost being strength. The tripod that you choose should be strong enough to hold the kind of telescope that you are buying.

Binoculars Telescopes

Telescopes have come up a long way, since the time they were invented and are no longer restricted to merely military purpose and today they are more or less related to astronomy, although they are still continued to be used for military purposes. What makes them so very popular is that of the various purposes that they can be used for. Today, they are available in various shapes and sizes, and are far more powerful than their older counterparts. They are also accompanied by a larger number of features, and are also a lot cheaper, than what they used to be earlier. This is another major contributor to the ever growing popularity of the telescope.

Although the traditional shape of the telescope has been that of a monocular optical instrument. They were later on modified, in the form of binoculars, which soon became very popular. These were easy to view and gave a better view as well. These wonderful instruments were invented in the early nineteenth century, although scientists were toying with the idea of a double optic device, since the beginning of the eighteenth century itself. The first binoculars were based on the Galilean telescope, and they were therefore named as the Galilean Binoculars. These binoculars were very popular and became a regular feature, first in operas, and thereafter in race courses as well.

In the late nineteenth century, the prism binoculars entered the market and with the help of their amazing power and better view, they were able to capture the market. Soon Galilean telescopes were out of production and prismatic binoculars took over the mantle from there.

These days, you will also find telescopes in the form of binoculars. Although these telescopes resemble a lot to binoculars, they are far more powerful and provide much better viewing. Like most telescopes, they are mounted over a tripod, or a single legged stand, which are generally adjustable, in order to provide better viewing. Depending upon the aperture, other features, as well as, accessories, these binocular telescopes are available in a various price ranges.

If you are interested in buying one for your self, then in that case, you can do a bit of research in this regard; in order to get the best deals. On of the best places to start your search is the internet. You will come across a number of dealers, who deal with telescope binoculars. You can compare the prices of the various instruments and get across the best deals.

In any case, a binocular telescope can prove to be a very important instrument for you.

The Hubble Telescope

The Hubble telescope was carried into the orbit by the space shuttle in the year nineteen hundred and ninety and it was named after the honorable scientist Sir Edwin Hubble.

Talking about the history of the Hubble Space Telescope, we can say it lays its base since the 1940’s when the astronomer Lyman Spitzer had written the paper “Astronomical advantages of an extra terrestrial observatory.

When the Hubble space telescope was launched it took with itself the five remarkable instruments, basically the wide field and planetary camera, the Goddard high resolution spectrograph and the high speed photometer, a faint object camera and the faint object spectrograph. The first component used i.e. the wide fielded and planetary camera provides a very high resolution which is the basic need for optical observations. This component was built by the NASA’s jet propulsion labs and they had used a set of forty nine filters. When launched, the HST carried five scientific instruments: the Wide Field and The Hubble telescope used CCD chips .And the wide field camera gave a larder resolution. The planetary camera which was used could easily take images at a longer focal length and the wide field chips gave greater magnification in addition.

The NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope is one of the largest visible-light observatory which has been successfully been installed in the space and is giving numerous benefits. The magnificent view displayed by this telescope has no doubt made the telescope a vital instrument for astronomers throughout the world and formed the basis of the basic discoveries related to the formation of the universe, the origin and end of the mighty stars and given significant contribution in knowing the age of the universe and also helped in the work done on the development of the different galaxies.

The NASA’s Hubble telescope orbits the earth once in ninety six minutes. The Hubble telescope also helps in recording difficult astronomical images and also in recording the bands of ultraviolet and infrared light. The Baltimore NASA’s Hubble telescope provides you a nice view of the atmospheric debris of objects which were captured along with Jupiter during a collision.

The Hubble telescope is a complete blend of multiple sharp and outstanding scientific instruments and they can effectively handle different tasks. The high resolving power provided by the NASA’s Hubble telescope has helped a lot in the studies of Cepheid variable stars found in the faraway galaxies and also helped in measuring the distances of the galaxies.

Orion Starblast 4.5 Astro Telescope

A telescope is one of the most popular instruments of the current times. What makes this optical instrument so very amazing is that it is used for a large number of purposes, making it a multi-utility instrument. These optical instruments were invented in the early seventeenth century and became major military equipment, widely used by armies. Thereafter, Galileo made a few changes in it and used it for negating several astronomical myths, which were prevalent in those times. Since then, telescopes are primarily associated with astronomy. There have been major changes in terms of shapes, sizes and power.

These days, telescopes are widely available and their prices have also fallen drastically over a period of time. This has made them very much in the reach of ordinary people. These days, telescopes have become a major educational instrument, playing a vital role in the education of kids as well as budding astronomers. Most schools today are equipped with telescopes. Apart from that, you will find telescopes in a large number of homes as well.

So, if your kid shows a keen interest in astronomy, then in that case, a telescope would be a great instrument, that you can gift him or her on his or her birthday. The Orion StarBlast Astro telescope can be an excellent option in this regard.

This telescope has been primarily projected as a beginner telescope for children of all ages. However, it was soon figured out that the Orion telescope can be quite useful for grown ups as well. This further catapulted its popularity level. The fact that it was equipped with good optics and had easy to use features also came up as a major boost.

The Orion StarBlast Astro is equipped with a 4.5 inch diameter parabolic mirror and has a focal length of 450mm. The telescope is accompanied with Explorer II Kellner 7mm and 6mm 1.25″ eyepieces, which are fully coated and offer crystal clear images. It provides magnification of 26x and 75x. It also features a 50° apparent field-of-view, as well as a 10° field-of-view with vertical images. You will also get a 1.25″ rack-and-pinion focuser, along with a collimation cap as well as center-marked primary mirror.

Along with these, the telescope is also accompanied by an easy to use mount fitted with Teflon/nylon bearings for absolutely smooth operation, which makes, rotating and pointing to a distant object a smooth affair. You also get an eyepiece rack apart from a carrying handle. Since the telescope is primarily aimed at kids, it has great aesthetics as well.

How to Use a Telescope ?

Do you know how to use a telescope? A telescope is a very special kind of optical instrument which should be handled with care. If you have recently bought a brand new telescope, one should have complete practical knowledge oh handling the telescope.

The first important thing to be kept in mind is that first one should the right place where you want to place your telescope. Always take care before taking out the telescope out of the telescope out of the telescope box that you take it out on a cool night and allow it first to cool down and then use it.

Have you ever seen amateur astronomers with the desire to search for more and an inner urge to explore the vast stretch of the universe? They are often seen carrying the necessary astronomical kits for stargazing and they may be seen walking over long distances just for fulfilling their innate desires.

First of all learn to spot the different types of stars and constellations and planets as well. Don’t ever confuse yourself on seeing the different types of jargons on the different websites associated with the purchase of telescopes. Read a lot about the different types of telescopes, their sizes, the type of mirrors and lenses used the details of the different prices, and much more and select the one which suits your needs.

The set up of each and every telescope is different. There is always an n optical tube of some kind, a mount as well as eyepiece. After getting acquainted with the components of the telescope you should try to assemble and dissemble your telescope each time you use it. First try to set up your telescope before you take it out in the dark.

The telescope’s view depends largely on ambient temperature. You should thus wear eyeglasses as appreciation. Wear eyeglasses, Also keep in mind to align your finder scope in advance. And set your telescopes viewing timings in advance.

One should always have an idea what you are going to achieve and how beneficial your telescope is going to be. It is very simple and will be helpful to you a lot if you will look for the related images of telescopes on the net as well as books of astronomy. A good telescope has high resolving power, sound magnification, is light weight, within your budget and gives you clear and detailed images. If you wish to see the lunar surfaces as well as the planets better look up in a related map. Using the telescopes you can easily view the distant stars, the moon, the planets, nebulas and much more, your galaxy the Milky Way and other galaxies also. One should know that telescopes are not so cheap but when you buy them you get what you have paid for.
